Call for Papers and Workshops

Embracing the New Africa: Working together towards flourishing urban environments

8th- 9th October 2019

In 2006, a tipping point took place. Since that time there have been more people living in cities than in rural communities. Over the last 12 years the rate of urbanisation has increased, with existing cities growing faster than ever before and new ones being built.

In the face of rapid urbanisation, we are left with many questions, a key one being; how can our cities and urban environments become places where people and everything associated with life flourishes?

We are seeking papers and workshops that address this question through a number of different lenses or sectors;

  • Theology / philosophy of the city
  • Educating for the city
  • The healthy city
  • Community development
  • Environment
  • Good Governance
  • Young people
  • Urban Design and Resilience
  • Urban Poverty
  • Smart Cities
  • Arts and Culture
  • Economic justice

Embracing the New Africa: Working together towards flourishing urban environmentsconference is a gathering of people from Southern Africa who are passionate about creating urban environments where all can flourish.

This 3-day event seeks to be a catalyst for ongoing conversation and action towards cities where no one gets left behind.

The Outcomes

The conference aims to be a catalyst for ongoing conversation and action. In this way, we are working towards the following outcomes;

  • The creation of a gathering of people who are passionate about working towards flourishing urban environments
  • The creation of spaces for conversations within and across sectors of the city
  • The creation of collaborative plans and projects that will lead towards flourishing cities across all Southern Africa
  • The Creation of a Southern Africa network of urban practitioners, leaders and academics, that will further the work of the conference
  • The creation of an edited book on the findings of the consultation.

All workshops and papers must address one of the above sectors and lead to practical outcomes towards the creation of flourishing cities.

Workshop Proposals (300 words)

Workshop proposals must show;

  • A clear connection between the sector and the overall theme of the conference
  • A clear pathway towards action
  • How they will be interactive
  • The hoped for outcome of the workshop

Paper Proposals / abstract (300 Words)

Paper proposals must show;

  • A clear connection between the sector and the overall theme of the conference
  • How the theory relates to practice
  • How the ideas in your paper can form part of the pathway towards a flourishing city

References aren’t needed for the proposal / abstract, however will be required for the completed paper. Details will be forwarded on acceptance of the proposal / abstract.

Thanks for your interest in this vital subject and we look forward to receiving your proposal.
