Deogratias Niyonzima shares about a recent tragedy in Burundi:

The disaster began in the village of Rutunga, which is located  19 miles South of Bujumbura (the capital city). The impact of the disaster affected a second village called Nyaruhongoka, detroying houses and many lost all their belongings.

On Sunday, March 29, 2015, around 2:00 pm, a few hours after the Sunday church service, 3 hours of heavy rain and hail stones dislodged a side of the mountain. The mountain slide into the river creating a sudden  blockage.  This meant the rain water had no where to go and caused serious flooding in Rutunga village, inclduing destruction of the Free Methodist Church building, along with the classses from the primary and secondary classes.

Rutunga village was home to just over 3,000 people (400 homes). 15 people have so far died in this disaster (7 were swept away - 2 men, 1 woman and 4 children). In the second village of Nyaruhongoka a further 4 people had died (1 man, 1 woman and 2 children). Those living on the mountainside have also been affected with so far 4 known deaths.

This emergeny report sent in by a member of Micah indicates how many tragedies are happening that rarely get picked up by international news channels, yet are deeply affecting many families.

One of the questions Micah will be addressing at our up and coming Global Consultation is how can we respond together in emergnecies that affect our local communities.

Please follow up on this story through our monthly prayer focus May issue.
