Faith Matters - the contribution of faith to health and healthcare in the post 2015 agenda

This paper is submitted by the Christian Medical Fellowship (CMF)1, a network of 4,000 doctors and 800 medical students in the UK. We have a strong interest in global health, with over 170 of our members currently living and working in low income countries and hundreds more who are involved in regular short-term visits. Through the International Christian Medical and Dental Association (ICMDA) we are affiliated with over 80 national Christian medical organisations around the world, many of which are in low-income countries.

CMF appreciates the opportunity to engage in the reflections on how to address the health needs of the world’s population post-2015. In this submission we focus on two issues:

1. The important link between faith and health to individuals and communities; the influence of faith cannot be ignored in the quest to improve the health of the world’s population.
2. The essential role of faith based organisations in healthcare provision.

Although CMF is an association of Christian doctors, our members regularly work closely with individuals and groups from other faiths. While examples given in this document are often of Christian organisations, the general principles set out apply to other faith groups as well.

Grace, Faith and Good Works

Grace, Faith and Good Works - A Biblical Reflection

By Rev Pax Tan
7 May 2014

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is a gift from God - not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God has prepared in advance for us to do." (Ephesians 2: 8 - 10)
It is wonderful to be saved from our sins, to be forgiven and to have eternal life. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, so that whoever believes in him, shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3: 16)

Then what? What are we saved for? Just to have eternal life?! Is God's kingdom in a far-away place somewhere over the rainbow? What about now on this earth, where you and I are stuck to, held by gravity? What are we supposed to do after receiving this grace of God, through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ?

Faith in Action: Examining the Role of Faith-Based Organizations in Addressing HIV/AIDS

Faith in Action: Examining the Role of Faith-Based Organizations in Addressing HIV/AIDS

HIV/AIDS is the most devastating epidemic in human history. With 40 million people now living with HIV/AIDS and an estimated 3 million people having died in 2003 alone,1 the international community is working diligently to identify effective mechanisms to prevent HIV transmission and provide care, support and treatment for those affected by and living with the virus. Human and financial resources are still consider- ably inadequate to meet the overwhelming level of existing need. It is, therefore, imperative that existing resources be used wisely, based on the best available evi- dence of what works.
