The media tends to focus on sudden large disasters, yet miss the profound reality that a majority of people who die unnecessarily each year, die from local events and systems that don’t reach our news reports. Those most adversely affected are from poor and often marginalised  communities, who have received limited-to-no support. Compounding this problem is the ever-reducing availability of resources (international and national) that can be drawn on for the meeting of basic life-saving needs. Even when aid is supplied, building the community capacity to become more resilient for future shocks is limited. Unjust systems continue to be the cause of poverty cycles, death and conflict.

In 2013 the Christian Council of Sweden (CCS) published a booklet as a response to the challenge of climate changes. The booklet was written by a small working group with representatives from the four church traditions that are parts in the CCS: Orthodox/Eastern, Roman Catholic, Lutheran and Baptist/Free Churches. Writing the text was a learning experience for the group, trying to unite around a common text in the understanding that differences could either be part of a wider and fuller picture or parts of theological reasoning that must be left un-reconciled. This paper presents the text and describes the process of discussion of alternative wordings.

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) broke out in Wuhan, China in December 2019, and on the 11th of March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a global pandemic. Normal life in many places has since been affected. COVID-19 is not just a healthy issue. It has also revealed different layers of socio-economic inequality in most of the countries. For instance, in the United Kingdom people from BAME (BLACK ASIANS AND MINORITY ETHNIC) communities appear to be disproportionately affected by COVID-19. In the United States of America which has a higher number of Minorities than the UK, people of color (African Americans/Hispanic/Native Americans), have been some of the most affected. According to Sherita Golden (John Hopkins Medicine 4/2020), disproportionate rates of COVID -19 illness and death in Black, Latino/Hispanic and Native communities are more than in white communities. These communities, says Golden, “share common social and economic factors, already in place before the pandemic, that increased their risk for COVID-19”. She further observes that risk factors for people of colour include, living in crowded housing conditions, working in essential fields, inconsistent access to health care, and stress and immunity. Some of these factors also apply to communities at risk in other parts of the world.

INTEGRAL MISSION, THE BIBLE AND THE CHURCH

1.1.1 A Definition: What is Integral Mission?

Integral mission “involves saying, doing and being people of the kingdom” (Melba Maggay). It is both speaking the good news of Jesus and living it out through a lifestyle of active service.

The Micah Declaration defined it in the following way:

“Integral mission or holistic transformation is the proclamation and demonstration of the gospel. It is not simply that evangelism and social involvement are to be done alongside each other. Rather, in integral mission our proclamation has social consequences as we call people to love and repentance in all areas of life. And our social involvement has evangelistic consequences as we bear witness to the transforming grace of Jesus Christ. If we ignore the world, we betray the word of God which sends us out to serve the world. If we ignore the word of God, we have nothing to bring to the world.

Justice and justification by faith, worship and political action, the spiritual and the material, personal change and structural change, belong together. As in the life of Jesus, being, doing and saying are at the heart of the integral task”

All Christians everywhere, whatever their cultural background or theological persuasion must think at some time or other about the relation between the church and the world. We too gather here for the next few days to ponder on the same unavoidable questions that have troubled the Christian conscience in every generation: What should be the church relation to the world? What is the Christian’s responsibility towards the whole non-Christian community? How does evangelism and social involvement relate to one another? In reply to these questions The Micah

The progress of evangelicals towards an integrated approach to mission can be observed in the consultation and conference statements surveyed in the previous paper. Needless to say, it takes far more than good statements to enable Christians to make a meaningful contribution to integral mission. The statements, however, are indicative of a new mentality searching for change. The two encounters with Jesus in Luke 7:36-50 and 19:1-10 might not seem on the surface have much to do with integral mission, justice or indeed with each other. But on closer examination the issues are very pertinent. The two people, a man and a woman, are different. But they have some things in common. Neither of them suffers obvious financial hardship, but they are nevertheless part of the marginalized people of Jewish culture.
